Sourcing novel seaweed species for biostimulants
"Through this challenge, we sought to collaborate with R&D partners beyond the agricultural sector to access seaweed samples and extracts, recognizing their unique properties as a potential solution to enhancing plant and soil health for farmers."

The Challenge
This challenge aimed to identify novel seaweed species or seaweed extracts for agricultural applications, focusing on wild or farmed species capable of being produced at scale.
Seaweed’s unique chemical profile distinguishes it from other biological sources, such as microbials, plant extracts, and fine chemicals. Its chemical diversity, renewable sourcing potential, and environmentally friendly properties made it an exciting platform to explore. We wanted to expand the range of seaweeds applied in agriculture, and we were open to non-food-grade products and extracts to do so.
This challenge attracted significant interest from start-ups and other potential partners in the supply chain, with proposals received from across the globe. We are currently evaluating the outputs of this challenge to explore innovative ways to harness the potential of novel seaweed species and extracts for agricultural advancements.
Moving forward
While this challenge is now closed, our innovation in this space continues. If you still want to help us explore the potential of novel seaweed species, we’d love to hear from you.
